Toshiba Will Supply Japan’s Largest Battery Energy Storage System.

"Toshiba announced Japan’s largest lithium-ion energy storage system – 40 MW and 40 MWh.
40 MWh is like 1,500 electric cars and of couse full powerof 40 MW can be provided for up to one hour.
Construction work already began and this large scale battery, consisting of Toshiba’s SCiB cells, will go live in February 2016.
The order for the ESS was placed by Tohoku Electric Power Company to improve supply-demand balance of renewable energy."

Tesla Energy


The world currently consumes 20 trillion kWh of energy annually.

Enough energy to power a single family home for 1.8 billion years or supply energy to a nuclear power plant for 2,300 years (or launch the Falcon 9 rocket seventeen million times). 
Of all the fossil fuel consumed in the United States, one third is used in transportation and another third goes to electricity production. The US electric power sector alone produces over 2,000 million metric tons of CO2 which is like burning 225 billion gallons of gas. The EPA says it would require 1.6 billion acres of US forest to negate the environmental damage. 

What if we could move the electricity grid off of fossil fuels and towards renewable energy sources?

Once we’re able to rely on renewable energy sources for our power consumption, the top 50% of the dirtiest power generation resources could retire early. We would have a cleaner, smaller, and more resilient energy grid.

Powerwall


Tesla Powerwall is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery designed to store energy at a residential level for load shifting, backup power and self-consumption of solar power generation. Powerwall consists of Tesla’s lithium-ion battery pack, liquid thermal control system and software that receives dispatch commands from a solar inverter. The unit mounts seamlessly on a wall and is integrated with the local grid to harness excess power and give customers the flexibility to draw energy from their own reserve. 
The battery can provide a number of different benefits to the customer including:
  • Load shifting – The battery can provide financial savings to its owner by charging during low rate periods when demand for electricity is lower and discharging during more expensive rate periods when electricity demand is higher
  • Increasing self-consumption of solar power generation – The battery can store surplus solar energy not used at the time it is generated and use that energy later when the sun is not shining
  • Back-up power – Assures power in the event of an outage
Powerwall increases the capacity for a household’s solar consumption, while also offering backup functionality during grid outages. 

Powerwall is available in 10kWh, optimized for backup applications or 7kWh optimized for daily use applications. Both can be connected with solar or grid and both can provide backup power. The 10kWh Powerwall is optimized to provide backup when the grid goes down, providing power for your home when you need it most. When paired with solar power, the 7kWh Powerwall can be used in daily cycling to extend the environmental and cost benefits of solar into the night when sunlight is unavailable. 
Tesla’s selling price to installers is $3500 for 10kWh and $3000 for 7kWh. (Price excludes inverter and installation.) Deliveries begin in late Summer.

TreeHouse, a sustainable home improvement store, is collaborating with Tesla to sell Powerwall. “For the first time, running your home on a battery will be affordable and easy,” says TreeHouse co-founder and president Jason Ballard. “I think in the near future, having a battery in your home will be as normal as having a water heater or a dishwasher.” Ballard added, “This just takes us one step closer to being able to power homes completely without the use of fossil fuels.”
Fronius

Tesla Energy for Utilities


For utility scale systems, 100kWh battery blocks are grouped to scale from 500kWh to 10MWh+. These systems are capable of 2hr or 4hr continuous net discharge power using grid tied bi-directional inverters. 
Systems support applications including peak shaving, load shifting and demand response for commercial customers while offering, renewable firming and a variety of grid services at utility scales. 
Tesla Energy for Utilities is designed to: 
  • Firm up renewable generation by reconciling the intermittency of power from these sources and storing excess capacity to dispatch when it’s needed.

Southern California Edison
Edison International is proud of its efforts to help create a market for battery storage systems and its work with Tesla to bring this technology to customers. Southern California Edison (SCE), the regulated utility subsidiary of Edison International, has developed the nation’s largest battery storage system and has contracts in place for an additional 264 megawatts of storage, including projects using Tesla batteries. SCE is working with Tesla on three demonstration projects that can help drive down the cost of battery storage systems for residential and business customers, as well as EV drivers. These demand response demonstration projects will test communication capabilities and explore rebates to customers who allow SCE to manage their battery charging in order to increase the use of renewable energy while ensuring continued grid reliability.
SoCore Energy, a subsidiary of Edison Energy, which is Edison International’s portfolio of competitive businesses and equity interests in emerging companies, is working with a client to design and install Tesla batteries at two of their retail properties in Southern California. The sites will feature Tesla battery units that will be charged with electricity from the grid during nonpeak hours at night. The two battery systems will be able to store up to 400 kilowatts and 600 kilowatts, respectively. SoCore Energy is working with its client to identify additional locations for potential battery installations. SoCore Energy is not the same company as Southern California Edison, the utility, and SoCore Energy is not regulated by the California Public Utilities Commission.

Tesla's Elon Musk Unveils Stored Sunlight in Batteries


From a man who made his name and charted his career with lofty goals and often unexpected financial decisions, the news came with little surprise: Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Motors Inc., unveiled a product line of electric batteries late last night in Los Angeles.
Musk introduced the Tesla Powerwall, a wall-mounted lithium-ion electric battery for homes and small businesses, and the Tesla Powerpack, a heftier version of the same core product designed for utility-scale use.
He also announced a new wing of the company, Tesla Energy, which will begin shipping the Powerwall systems to domestic customers in three to four months. Deliveries will trickle out slowly, he said, then accelerate next year when the company begins shipping orders out from its so-called Gigafactory in Nevada.
Yet Musk spoke first about rising emissions and climate change solutions, not cars. He used a slide show of power plants and smoggy skies to introduce the problems. “It sucks, exactly,” he said. “I think we, collectively, should do something about this,” he added, “for us and a lot of other creatures.” Read More on SA

The End of ICE: Genius Elon Musk Starts The Race To The Bottom Of Energy Storage Prices.




  I do not even pretend to really understand all the depth of Elon Musk's thinking about the energy storage with open source for Tesla's patents. Basically, after unveiling the PowerWall and PowerPack he has started Solar 2.0 race to the bottom for the price of the energy storage unit. Like with Solar, now Solar City is making money providing the solution with "dirt cheap" solar panels and attractive financing plans. PowerWall will become the part of this package opening huge market literally overnight. I was very impressed by the price $3.5k per 10 kWh PowerWall, but just wait until Gigafactory will come on line. 
  Now auto-makers can start to be really worried. ICE cars can become obsolete very fast. Elon Musk has just opened huge energy storage market combined with unprecedented growth in Solar installations all around the world. Tony Seba will be the good source to comprehend this tectonic shift. And while Tesla will be definitely making progress with utility storage, I think that his main goal to reach first will be the mass market for electric cars. It will happen with Gigafactory and $100 per kWh for lithium battery. Energy storage race can make this tipping point even more valid. China with its huge market and state-level incentives has already produced lithium materials leaders, who control lithium hydroxide market. Inside Tesla's PowerWall and PowerPack are lithium cells produced by Panasonic with more and more lithium hydroxide supplied from China. Now China is moving up the value chain with LG Chem, Foxconn, BYD and Boston Power building their own lithium Megafactories. 
  Elon Musk's genius is that by opening patents for energy storage he will employ huge capital and manufacturing base in China. Lithium cells will become commodity with copycats for his PowerWall and PowerPack. Ability to produce the lithium battery is one thing, power of the brand and packaged solution with Solar is another. I think that Chinese companies even here will succeed very fast. To produce Tesla Model S or coming Tesla Model III is completely different story. You do not really expect a lot from your PowerWall - just to be safe and functional. The battery for the electric car is completely different story, as your beloved car itself. This is where Tesla will rule for the long time and, maybe, Apple can actually get very fast traction after outsourcing power-train to Tesla and employing its own brand power and pile of cash.
  Nobody knows what will actually happen, but Elon Musk with his bold decision has started another revolution these days. Without fear he has priced his energy storage at the very low range and started the race to the bottom for the price of the energy storage unit. His dream about mass market for electric cars now can be almost certain - at least on part of the battery cost.
  In our own case we can be certain that security of lithium supply will be the most important thing at the very bottom of the vertically integrated businesses in this next industrial revolution - Elon Musk has shown the market today. We are building the one with our strategic partner Ganfeng Lithium and today Elon Musk has put our industry into the higher gear and this race is only the beginning. The chart below already confirms that this is happening.

Lithium Hydroxide - A Perfect Price Storm Just Before Tesla Battery Storage Announcement.

 "War On Pollution" in China produces a range of new concepts of electric cars to conquer the largest auto-market in the world. Not all of them will become the hit in the market, but the trend is apparent - EV is the future for mobility in China. Government supports this leap into the lithium based technology to close the gap with western auto-makers. Security of supply for lithium takes the centre stage in the development of strategic industry - electric cars. Tesla Gigafactory has already spiked interest to the lithium batteries and Megafactories are being built now in China by LG Chem, Foxconn, BYD and Boston Power.
