Bloomberg Intelligence: Chinese Gold Standard Would Be "Game Changer”.

This summer doldrums in Gold could be over very soon. Next week will be very interesting with Greece saga continued and China's rates cut after the record plunge in the stock market. Will Chinese coming back into gold finally smash the lid at 1,200 level? The news from Bloomberg Intelligence few years ago would propel gold $100 overnight easily, but today it is almost like no event in the market. While the West is chasing stocks in the Wall Street Bubble again, China is buying record amount of Gold and collecting the stakes in the best mining projects all over the world.

"Could gold, the world's longest running currency be used to create a new order in global currencies? The Chinese central bank is said to be considering backing its yuan with the yellow metal. This move, says Ken Hoffman, Global Head of Metals and Mining Research for Bloomberg Intelligence, would be a "game changer." Why would China consider such a move? Hoffman explains that Chinese policy makers are already trying to establish the yuan as a reserve currency, and backing it with gold would help attract foreign capital inflows. China is expected to receive approval from its central bank for a yuan-denominated gold fix, with a potential for an announcement as early as next week. Hoffman explains that a gold standard would not necessarily create a big constraint to the Chinese central bank, as many believe. “It could be at any price they fix. There’s a lot of things that they can do to make this work,” he says. Hoffman estimates that to create an exchange rate of one ounce of gold for every $64,000, the country would need about 10,000 metric tons of the metal. "That’s nine times the nation’s official holdings and about 6 percent of all the bullion ever mined globally," Hoffman says. Moving to a gold standard may also be a question of power for China. Hoffman says that when the U.S. adopted a gold standard after World War II, it emerged as the main power in the International Monetary Fund. In 1971, the U.S. ended the use of the gold standard and rendered the dollar a fiat currency. If China decides to go into some form of a gold standard, Hoffman says it would make the rest of the world view the metal as a currency again. “If they go for it, we’d be talking about fireworks,” he says. James Rickards: Gold And Major Flaws In FED's Risk Models - The Death Of Money.

James Rickards makes one his best presentations on the state of the economy and the looming crisis underneath the surface of "happy markets". Gold, China and risk management of complex financial systems are among the very well articulated issues which will determine the future for the world's financial system. Gold manipulation is the very important part of this system and now we can have the changing market place in the making.

DOJ Probes Banks for Silver, Gold Price Manipulation.

Finally one more conspiracy theory is on its way to the court rooms. Let's see how serious DOJ will be acting here. What can be easier than just contact GATA and Bill Murphy for all the evidence, who was banned from CNBC for telling the truth about manipulation of gold?
TNR Gold projects will benefit from the fair market pricing of Gold as will all other people who are suffering from the unreported rise in the real cost of living and real inflation in prices of food and other basic services.

Peter Epstein: Interview Of “Mr. Lithium,” Joe Lowry Of Global Lithium LLC.

Peter Epstein presents to us the very interesting view from the independent insider into the very closed and tightly held lithium market. Tesla is making headlines and situation with SQM provides another evidence of the importance of secure lithium supply for the major players. Joe Lowry is raising alarm about the coming shortage in the lithium supply even before Tesla's Gigafactory will be coming on-line and I have been talking about it before, you can continue your research on the links below. Now we have another catalyst for the lithium industry in the making. Access to the capital is the most important for the junior miners working on building lithium supply chain. Ganfeng Lithium - one of the new top lithium producers from China is financing the development of J/V projects with International Lithium in Ireland and Argentina.

Chile, Lithium And SQM: What To Expect From The Chilean Lithium Industry?

What is really happening with SQM and lithium production in Chile now? Is it really the perfect storm and the very tight battery grade lithium supply will be under further strain from political battle around Atacama? Daniella Desormeux from signumBOX will be one of the best sources to explore the ongoing situation.

Security Of Lithium Supply: SQM Stock Still Down On News Chile Wants To Revoke Mining Leases.

Here comes the perfect storm for the lithium supply chain. Politics, bribes and fight around the "hot assets" in Atacama are not the best ingredients for the hungry Chinese companies ramping up battery grade lithium supply for the coming Megafactories all over the world. Meanwhile Tesla Gigafactory is still relying on Panasonic to sort out all lithium supply issues. Price of battery grade lithium was going up even before these political games around SQM and now rain storms will add to the strains on production in Atacama. Now you can better appreciate why Chinese giant Ganfeng Lithium is financing and developing with International Lithium our J/V projects - security of Lithium supply is taking the central stage for the ongoing electric rEVolution.

Elon Musk's Gigafactory Battery Plan Spurs Lithium Producers To Weigh New Plants.

News about the potential shortage in battery grade lithium supply is travelling fast and now hitting the mainstream media.

Tesla Gigafactories: Is There Enough Lithium to Maintain the Growth of the Lithium-Ion Battery Market?

Joe Lowry: Lithium Capacity Additions Will Be Short Of Demand.

"Joe Lowry is sounding the rising alert for all industry insiders about the coming shortage of lithium. Tesla is waiting for Panasonic to solve all the supply problems, but the growing demand is already pushing prices higher even before Gigafactory comes on-line! The ignition of mass market for electric cars and energy storage will come with lower lithium battery cost. Gigafactory promise us to bring the magic $100 per kWh. Supply of lithium will become crucial and its security will be even more important than its price.
Our partner Ganfeng Lithium controls with other Chinese companies 75% capacity of battery grade lithium hydroxide now. We are moving into the new landscape for critical materials which are powering the green revolution. Stay tuned for the update from our lithium exploration programs on J/V projects in Ireland and Argentina."

Joe Lowry: What The Beginning Of Lithium Shortage Looks Like.

"Joe Lowry from @globallithium presents another evidence of growing constrains in the lithium supply chain. He knows International Lithium strategic partner Ganfeng Lithium very well and has covered its incredible growth in his previous articles, which you can find on this blog as well. Read more."

International Lithium Corp. Updates on Drilling Programs in Argentina and Ireland.

We have great news today from our both J/V projects with Ganfeng Lithium! You already know about my personal vision for the lithium industry and our strategic partnership between International Lithium and Ganfeng Lithium from China. Now we have results coming in from our exploration and development programs.

Interview of “Mr. Lithium,” Joe Lowry of Global Lithium LLC

Joe Lowry’s Twitter: @globallithium   joe.lowry@lithiumllc.com
After more than two decades working for one of the “Big 3” lithium companies in senior positions in the US, Japan and China; Mr. Lowry formed Global Lithium LLC – an advisory firm that works with lithium producers, users, investors, hedge funds and governments on four continents. Mr. Lowry has an extensive network of contacts with lithium suppliers and users. Considered one of the world’s leading experts in lithium supply and markets, his recent articles on the lithium market can be found on his Linked-In page: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jplowry
The following interview was conducted by phone and email in the week ended June 5, 2015. The interviewer, Peter Epstein, CFA, MBA of EpsteinResearch.com has no prior or existing relationship with any company listed herein. Peter Epstein has no prior or existing relationship with Joe Lowry or any of his business activities. I thank “Mr. Lithium,” for his time last week as he had a very busy schedule.
Please provide readers with an overview of the supply side of the lithium market including where we are in the cycle.
We should be in a period of significant investment, bringing large capacity additions; however several factors have conspired to limit investment. They include: the political situation in Argentina and Chile, slower than anticipated development of the EV market, uncertainty caused by the delay in the start-up of Rockwood’sexpansion in Chile and a slow start-up by Orocobre, the failure and ultimate bankruptcy of Canada Lithium/RB Energy, etc. The lithium market has entered a shortage period that will last at least a year and possibly longer depending on how the Rockwood expansion and Orocobre ramp-up play out.
What are your thoughts on the demand?
Demand growth is led by batteries; however the base demand from grease, glass, and other industries continues to be stable, growing at GDP rates.
How important is the growing use of lithium for alloys such as lithium/aluminum for key components of airplanes, cars, etc?
Overall this demand is not significant in terms of lithium carbonate equivalent “LCE” demand; however this segment is high value so it will be more significant to a large metal producer such as Ganfeng.
How important on a global scale is lithium?
Iyou look at the person on your left and on your right, odds are over 99% they are carrying a cell phone or another personal electronic item that contains lithium. Can the world survive without lithium? – yes. Does it want to? – no.
Regarding the Lithium Triangle of Argentina, Chile and Bolivia is there risk of disruption of supply?
The government of Chile has made it difficult for both Rockwood and SQM to expand going back several years via the permitting process required to expand output. Argentina is a political mess that has investors reticent to make large bets on projects like Lithium Americas Corp’s Cauchari-Olaroz’s and Galaxy Resources’ Sal de Vida. Bolivia is even worse with an unstable government and limited infrastructure to support development of lithium reserves.
What properties of lithium, the lightest metal make it important in many applications?
For batteries, the electrochemical properties of lithium give it a great power to weight ratio and a reasonable number of recharge cycles  at an affordable cost. For other applications, lithium provides a wide range of benefits depending on the market – a powerful flux in glass, the enabler of grease to be used under a wide range of operating conditions, the catalyst for polymer and pharma reactions.
Has there been any changes in lithium prices over the last 6-12 months?
There is already a significant tightness in the upstream market (both carbonate and hydroxide) that will build over the next 24 months and result in a significant price rise. Prices have jumped substantially in the past year. Besides the delayed expansion at Rockwood and the slow start-up at Orocobre, another key factor is the limited output by SQM who seems to have production issues. They are not exporting in chemical form anywhere near the capacity they claim. They have been shorting customers in Asia on and off since 2014. The lithium chloride brine they ship to China as a raw material should not be counted in their LCE production when comparing their production vs. their stated capacity. Over the past 6 months it has become clear that supply is short which has caused the price to move up rather steeply unless annual contracts were involved. Suppliers are likely to go back to quarterly pricing reviews.
Has the use of lithium in batteries and large-scale energy storage become the go-to metal?
The term energy storage has many facets. Lithium will remain dominant in consumer electronics and transportation for the foreseeable future. Grid storage is still playing out – lithium certainly has a place but there are more competing technologies in that area. I see no short or medium term risk to lithium. Battery/Energy technologies take a long time to develop and be adopted.
How important is grade? In sectors such as graphite, grade is widely considered of paramount importance
Grade is important in certain areas but the term, “battery grade” is a marketing term over used by junior minors and analysts that don’t really understand the industry – the batteries currently going into Tesla’s cars are not made with, “battery grade” material as originally defined by their largest lithium supplier. There are certain specifications the lithium raw material must have but “battery grade” as a generic term creates more confusion than anything else. The “premium” many analysts discuss for “battery grade” lithium carbonate is largely a myth.
What are the differences between hard rock mining of lithium and lithium brines? Does each approach end up with roughly the same ending product?
Hard rock mining is generally more energy intensive and thus higher cost. On the other hand the capital cost for hard rock projects is generally lower, production cycle times are faster so there are trade-offs. Both lithium sources can ultimately provide world class product although there are certain differences in impurities.
I recognize this is a complicated question, but what can you say about China’s role in the lithium market?
China is the largest lithium market and has the largest capacity for lithium chemical manufacture. While the “big 3″ waffled; China added capacity despite having the highest cost structure. Chinese companies have lower ROI criteria and, generally speaking, more appetite for risk which has more than compensated for their higher cost structure."

Lithium Race: Tesla To Set Up Supercharging Networks In China.

Tesla's estimated Asia Supercharger locations by the end of 2016.

Tesla Model 3 and the largest auto-market in the world in China are born for each other. Elon Musk is making his advance into Chinese market with more expensive exclusive luxury proposition of Tesla Model S and Supercharger network now. The same expanded network of Superchargers will support the roll out of Tesla Model 3 in China. "The War on Pollution" will be fought by electric cars charged by Solar Energy. Tesla Model 3 will bring us the mass market for electric cars and Chinese automakers are already fighting for the market with lower priced EV propositions.

Lithium Race: China's Guangzhou Auto To Invest $322 M In Electric Car Factory.

How to achieve the explosive growth like International Lithium's strategic partner Ganfeng Lithium? You need to have the largest auto-market in the world, "War on Pollution" and state-level support for the new strategic industry - electric cars. After Tesla Gigafactory, LG Chem, BYD, Foxconn, Boston Power and A123 are building their own Megafactories. New automakers, like Guanzhou Auto in China are moving now into electric space with announcements almost every month. International Lithium is building strategic supply chain for Ganfeng Lithium, our J/V in Ireland and Argentina are financed by Ganfeng and now we are receiving results.

Tesla Gigafactories: Is There Enough Lithium to Maintain the Growth of the Lithium-Ion Battery Market?

Elon Musk talks about "hundreds of Gigafactories to come" and other lithium batteries players are building their own Megafactories today. Tam Hunt brings the hot industry subject to the headlines. The short answer is: Yes, we have enough Lithium potentially in the world for electrification of all our transportation. But in order to get it as the raw material ready to be used we have to invest hundreds of millions of dollars and years to build this supply chain. The security of supply of lithium is taking the central stage for the main battery grade lithium producers.
The drama is that the demand is coming when junior miners are cut off the capital they need to develop the new projects. That is why International Lithium is very well positioned to participate in this trend with the financing of our lithium J/V projects by Chinese giant Ganfeng Lithium. Lithium supply issues are hitting headlines now and our results are coming from our exploration programs these days. You can find more information from lithium industry insiders on the supply issues on this blog.

"Mr. Kirill Klip, President, International Lithium Corp. comments, "We are very excited with the ability to continue to advance our projects to the next level through our partnership with Ganfeng Lithium. Recent announcements, by General Motors regarding the commencement of production of the battery-electric Bolt and Tesla with the ongoing construction of the Gigafactory and launch of the Model X, are strong indicators that the electric car is not only here to stay, but is the way of the future. As a result lithium will be a key ingredient in our daily lives and ILC will be ready to meet the demand for this raw and critical material."

"Mr. Kirill Klip, President, International Lithium Corp. comments, "We are excited to begin another round of drilling at Avalonia in Ireland. Ganfeng Lithium - the leading lithium materials producer from China is financing the development of our JV projects in Ireland and Argentina. There is strong growth in the lithium industry right now. We are taking the necessary steps to meet the increased demand and source the raw materials required for our partner's lithium products and create a supply chain to ultimately achieve the goal of building a vertically integrated lithium business."

"Mr. Kirill Klip, President, International Lithium Corp. comments, " We are very pleased to begin another round of exploration on the Mariana lithium-potash brine project in Argentina. The project is wholly owned together with our strategic partner, Ganfeng Lithium. Our project is unique to other lithium brine projects in many ways. Firstly, our joint venture owns the mineral rights to the entire Salar de Llullaillaco, which has high potassium to lithium ratio; therefore it may provide a significant credit to the cost of lithium extraction. Secondly, our strategic partner possesses the technology and facilities to analyze the brine chemistry and develop a metallurgical extraction process. Our current program will provide us with enough information to design and plan the next phase of exploration and development as we move toward conducting feasibility studies.

The concurrent exploration programs on the Mariana and Avalonia properties demonstrate we have not deviated from our original plan to produce lithium from multiple sources and deposit types. The lithium industry is heating up right now and our diversified portfolio and partnership with Ganfeng Lithium give us a strong foundation to build upon. I am excited to see things moving ahead and look forward to reporting the results of our programs to our investors in the near future."

"Mr. Kirill Klip, President, International Lithium Corp. comments, "We are highly encouraged by what we are learning about the thick brine aquifers at Mariana. We look forward to completing the pump test which will give us a sense of the potential productivity of wells in these aquifers and we are confident that our plan to acquire these key preliminary hydrological results prior to a mineral resource estimation is both an expeditious and cost effective approach toward an initial production assessment."

Gary Schellenberg, CEO and Executive Chairman, notes that "Success in the initial drilling program by intersecting pegmatites under cover confirms the exploration strategy and methods we are applying in the Avalonia project. This gives us confidence as we move ahead with plans to test both new and historical targets we are developing along the lithium belt."

Visual Capitalist:

The Looming Copper Supply Crunch

This infographic is presented by Western Copper & Gold
Copper is among the three most used metals in the world, and high quantities of the red metal must be mined every year to meet global demand.
The market for copper is equal to approximately $120 billion each year, which rivals that of even iron ore, the most widely traded metal. This is because infrastructure, technology, and automobiles consume massive amounts of copper.
Behind silver, copper is the second best metal for conducting electricity. That’s why 75% of copper is used in electrical wires or for wiring in machinery. From power grids to motherboards, copper wire is indispensable to modern society.
Copper is also essential for green energy and a sustainable future. For example, each generation of car needs more copper wiring: a gasoline-powered car needs 55 lbs, while hybrids and electric vehicles need 110 lbs and 165 lbs respectively. Further, it is estimated that an average of 3.6 tonnes of copper is used for each MW of wind power.

THE COPPER SUPPLY PROBLEM

The problem is: copper is not being discovered fast enough to meet upcoming demand. A study by Wood Mackenzie found that there will be a 10 million tonne supply deficit by 2028. That’s equal to the annual production of the world’s biggest copper mine (Escondida) multiplied by a factor of ten.
There are several reasons for this.
First, it now takes longer to go from discovery to production than ever before in the mining industry. Geological, environmental, and political challenges have brought the average lead time to around 20 years for new mines.
Beyond all of the challenges above, the economics also have to line up. Thomson Reuters GFMS estimates that for new copper supply to be incentivized to come online, the copper price must be $3.50 per pound.
Copper mining is all about grade or scale. The majority of global output comes from mega mines that have massive economies of scale to reduce costs. However, it has been a long-running trend that the grades for these established mines are dropping.
A good example of this is Escondida, the world’s largest copper mine which is located in Chile. It produced 6% of global copper output in 2014, but the mine is facing a similar problem to that of other large copper projects: grades are dropping. In 2007, the copper grade was 1.72%, but it is predicted to drop to half of that in upcoming years. In fact, BHP Billiton is expecting a year-over-year decline of 24% between 2015 and 2016.
Codelco is the world’s largest copper miner overall, and has recently announced a $25 billion investment plan to expand aging mines. It will spend $5 billion each year, but it expects no significant gain in production for its efforts.

THE COMING SUPPLY GAP

Add these factors together, and stocks of copper are at their lowest levels since 2008. Further, 4% of the world’s copper mining capacity falls off the table each year, which means that this must be replaced somehow.
With 10 Escondidas needed to fill a 10 million tonne supply deficit by 2028, metals investors need to stay vigilant as changes in the market will be coming.
