Lithium Race From DIEselGate: BMW To Mass Produce Electric Cars By 2020 And Will Have 12 Different Models By 2025.

Reuters reports that another great German automaker is going "full in" into the lithium race to leave the DIEselGate cancer hazard polluting dust behind. BMW has started lithium race early with BMW i3 and BMW i8, but both cars can hardly be called the mass market electric cars proposition because of the price for BMW i8 and even the sticker for BMW i3 was very high when you consider its previous range limitations.

An improved range for BMW i3 has ignited the sales of this urban electric mobility solution from BMW last year, but it is still hardly the car that BMW fans would like to see from the famous automaker. Now we can expect the full range of electric cars from BMW which will be like "normal" BMW, but better. The power of the BMW brand must do the rest, lithium technology is here, we are entering the Tsunami Stage for the mass market of Electric Cars After Tesla Earthquake.

The Lithium Technology is here. It took all humankind history to reach 1 million electric cars on our roads by 2015 and then just over a year to double it to 2 million units in the EV fleet in 2016! This is called exponential growth and we are at the very beginning of it. We have just crossed 1% of electric cars sales share for worldwide auto sales and electric cars are still just 0.2% of the total number of cars in the world. We have a long way to go to all new cars being electric, but it can be much faster than a lot of people think: Lithium Race At IMF: "Electric Cars Can Replace Motor Vehicles In The Next 10 To 25 Years."

We have The Switch in action when millions will be choosing electric cars. Bloomberg is forecasting that we will be able to choose from 200 EV models by 2020 and Elon Musk is "thinking hard" where to build Gigafactories 3,4,5 and 6. The market is not even close to the proper translation of what kind of EV tsunami is coming and how it will affect the demand for lithium and other energy metals.

International Lithium:

International Lithium Receives Proof of Concept Study for Lithium Recovery Using Membrane Separation

Vancouver, British Columbia--(Newsfile Corp. - September 5, 2017) - International Lithium Corp. (TSXV: ILC) (the "Company" or "ILC") is pleased to announce that it has received a final report, "Proof of Concept Study — Lithium Recovery Using Membrane Separation" (the "Study") prepared by Synexus (Pty) Limited of South Africa ("Synexus"). The Study was conducted utilizing (filtered) raw brine from the Salar de Llullaillaico, location of the Mariana lithium brine joint venture project ("Mariana") in Salta, Argentina. Results from the Study indicate that the selective recovery of lithium directly from raw (filtered) brine, with the simultaneous rejection of other cation and anion species, using a proprietary lithium selective separation process (the "technology") is possible. Lithium was selectively recovered from the raw brine to produce lithium hydroxide ("LiOH"), a high value ingredient used directly in lithium battery manufacturing, as a final product.

Summary of Study Results:
  • The use of the technology presents a possible alternative to the natural evaporation process currently proposed at Mariana.
  • The technology could provide a process route to produce lithium hydroxide directly from the raw brine without the need to remove contaminants like magnesium by liming, as would be required in the natural evaporation process.
  • Based on initial estimates, the technology can achieve higher recoveries than natural evaporation even with relatively low concentrations of lithium.*
  • Use of technology has the potential to enable a considerable increase in production rate compared to evaporative ponds. Lithium is directly removed from the brine and the (spent) brine can be returned to the basin with little effect on the water balance.*
  • With further refining, the technology could also permit the recovery of potassium and other cations if desired.
* At present, the Mariana Project joint venture partners have not conducted any formal economic analyses on the project. Statements regarding comparisons of recoveries are based on initial bench scale tests for the natural evaporation process and for the selective membrane technology. Additional testing and scaling up of the process is required before any definitive statements regarding recoveries can be made, and projected capital and operating costs can be effectively modeled and compared. The information provided herein is to provide a minimum level of confidence that the selective membrane method presents a possible alternative to the natural evaporation method of lithium extraction from the brine and further study is warranted based on these results. The "Study" is not a preliminary economic assessment, preliminary feasibility study or feasibility study. Any economic analysis would have to be supported by a preliminary economic assessment, preliminary feasibility study or feasibility study. The reader is cautioned that the Mariana project is still at an exploration stage and there is no guarantee that an economic mining scenario will result and no mineral reserves have yet to be defined as per the standards of disclosure defined in National Instrument 43-101 Standard of Disclosure for Mineral Projects.

At Mariana, the current focus for lithium extraction is to determine the break points of contaminants such as magnesium and sulphate in the natural evaporation process in order to define the timing of the liming process. Large quantities of lime and other reagents needed to neutralize the brine chemistry to prevent the loss of lithium through precipitation during the evaporation concentration process generally tend to have a severe negative impact on the economics of lithium brine operations.

In the case of the Mariana project, this new technology could provide an alternative to the currently adopted plan of using natural solar evaporation of producing a brine concentrate containing about 6% lithium that would be exported for refining.
This technology is proprietary to Synexus. It could be adjusted and configured for other brine deposits' unique chemistry, alleviating the need for costly and time consuming solution purification and pre-concentration steps such as required by natural solar evaporation.

"We consider this report very encouraging news for the advancement of our Mariana Lithium JV Project," commented Kirill Klip, Executive Chairman of ILC.

Lithium Race And Tesla Earthquake Aftershock: Coming Electric Cars Tsunami - Electrification Of China And India.

Lithium Race And Tesla Earthquake Aftershock: Coming Electric Cars Tsunami - Electrification Of China And India.

Kirill Klip, Executive Chairman International Lithium Corp.

International Energy Agency is finally seriously promoting electric cars. This brilliant infographic gives us the sense of what is really happening in the EV space now. I will give you another headline: "Tesla Earthquake Aftershock: Lithium Supply Chain Market Is Not Even Close To Being Ready For The Coming Electric Cars Tsunami." - translation is on the links below on my blog. I will help your research with another digest. Energy rEVolution is very hard to miss now, but the intensity of continued Oil and ICE Age auto-lobby disinformation propaganda tells me that serious money is still to be made in this Next Industrial rEVolution.

Norway already has a 29% share of electric cars sales;
Netherlands - 6.4%;
Sweden - 3.4%;
China, France, UK - 1.5% (each);
U.S. - 1.4%.

Now with an introduction of Tesla Model 3, this growth in EV sales will be dramatically accelerated. Tesla Model S and X comprise 45% of all electric cars' sales in the US this year! They are the best electric cars, but also the most expensive. Somebody has put it brilliantly about Tesla Model 3: "We had the best electric cars and we had the affordable electric cars. Now we have the best affordable electric car". The other more than 200 models of electric cars coming by 2020 will do the rest.

Electrification of China and India will drive the next phase of the worldwide growth in EV fleet. India has announced that all new cars on sale will be electric by 2030 and they are taking it seriously making the first tender for 10,000 EVs to be supplied for the government ministries and agencies now. Transfer of the best technology for Lithium Batteries and Electric Cars will be next. China is already The Centre of The Lithium Universe and exercises its state-level New Energy Plan step by step with the military discipline, starting with securing a Lithium Supply Chain.

IEA reports that in 2016, China accounted for more than 40% of the electric cars sold in the world, with 336,000 new cars registered. That is more than double the number sold in the U.S. China also has the largest electric car stock, with about a third of the global total EV fleet. But EVs are more than just electric cars: China has more than 200 million electric two-wheelers, 3 to 4 million low-speed EVs and 300,000 electric buses. The next fast growing sector will be electric trucks, like the ones produced by BYD. BYD is backed by Warren Buffett with his 10% stake and is the largest EV maker in the world at this moment, but Tesla is expected to overtake this company in the number of electric cars produced per month by the end of this year.

BYD is very proud to be back on the wave in China in July with over 11k EVs sold, it gives us over 130k per year EVs sold annualized. Elon Musk is talking about the rate of production with 20k Teslas per month by the end of this year and over 500k per year by the end of 2018. Tesla has more than 400,000 reservations for its Model 3. Now Elon Musk estimates the demand for Tesla Model 3 at 700,000 per year.

Lithium Hydroxide Production From Brine: Effective Separation Of Lithium From Contaminants By Membrane Technology.

Lithium Hydroxide Production From Brine: Effective Separation Of Lithium From Contaminants By Membrane Technology.

Kirill Klip, Executive Chairman International Lithium Corp.

We are talking here a lot about the new groundbreaking technologies for electric cars and lithium batteries. Now it is time to consider the most advanced technologies for the production of lithium as a raw material. The increasing usage of lithium batteries is driving the demand for lithium as a raw material and new extraction technologies will provide the technological advantage to the most progressive companies investing in the future.

My lower estimate for future demand is that 36 million tonnes of LCE (Lithium Carbonate Equivalent) must be produced by 2040 in order to meet the IEA's target for the 600 million electric cars necessary to keep global temperature increase below 2%. However, over 100 million tonnes of LCE will be needed if all new cars are to be electric by 2040, this being one of IMF's scenarios for the future. Now let's just start adding here the Energy Storage for Solar and Wind Power Generation.

Our starting point for electric cars is just over 1% of total auto sales in the world and only 200,000 tonnes of LCE produced in 2016. The dramatic increase in demand for lithium will require accelerated production from all known reserves of lithium and new resources will need to be found and put into production, this being crucial to the Energy rEVolution.

At International Lithium, we are very interested in processes developed for the recovery of Lithium Hydroxide directly from brine. Lithium Hydroxide is the highly sought strategic commodity which is used in lithium batteries as Tesla and Panasonic are doing for example at Tesla Gigafactory.  Read more.

Lithium Race Chasing Tesla: Morgan Stanley Predicts That Over A Billion Electric Cars Will Be On The Road By 2050.

Morgan Stanley joins top financial institutions with its own very bold prediction for over a billion electric cars on the road by 2050. You will not be surprised to hear from me that, actually, this is quite a conservative estimate and all new cars can be electric by 2040. IMF has issued a report "Riding the Energy Transition: Oil Beyond 2040" - "Just as motor vehicles displaced horses a century ago, electric cars could replace motor vehicles in the next 10 to 25 years"

Please note that in IMF's view for the electric cars my forecast of 36 million tonnes of LCE (Lithium Carbonate) to be produced by 2040 is very conservative and must be tripled in order to accommodate this transition to a fully electric fleet of new cars. According to The Economist, in the case of all new cars being electric by 2040, this fleet will count 1.8 Billion electric cars. We are talking here about over 100 million tonnes of LCE being produced by 2040 in order to make it happen.

Barron's:

Tesla: The Right Electric Vehicle at the Right Price?

Morgan Stanley predicts that over a billion electric cars will be on the road by 2050--and Tesla's success is one reason why.

"Yesterday, the folks at Morgan Stanley issued a massive report on the future of electric vehicles call On the Charge. In it, its analysts contend that there "over a billion EVs on the road by 2050," and explore nearly every aspect of the electric vehicle universe from the automakers to infrastructure to metals demand from batteries.
ILLUSTRATION: GETTY IMAGES
The first part of the report is titled "Why BEVs [battery electric vehicles] are really coming this time" and it's certainly justified that they begin there. Electric vehicles, after all, have been talked about for decades now, but there success looks, if not assured, then far more likely, and Tesla's(TSLA) success is one reason why.
The reason: "Tesla shows that the consumer preference for internal combustion engines can be swayed," Morgan Stanley's analysts write. They explain why:
Even successful electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf have made little headway in gaining global car market share, and many vehicles have failed to sell in any volume at all. However, technology and usability are improving, and charging times are falling. There will come an inflection point where range and usability combine with the right price.
The Tesla Model S has taken a 30% share in the $100k plus US luxury market share, and with over 400,000 orders in less than a month after initial launch, the Tesla Model 3 launch also suggests there is plenty of consumer demand for the right electric vehicle product at the right price."
