Daimler to Spend 100 Million Euros to Expand German Lithium Battery Output.

"Daimler will spend about $125 million in coming years to increase production of lithium-ion batteries in eastern Germany. The German automaker said on Monday it will expand capacity at Deutsche ACCUmotive, its battery-making division in Saxony as it expects "high and steadily-growing demand" for electric-car batteries. Daimler said, the unit supplies batteries for the luxury Mercedes division's hybrid S-Class, E-Class and C-Class models. Steps to increase battery output tie in with Daimler's plans announced last month to phase out production of lithium-ion battery cells at its second Saxony-based Li-Tec division by the end of 2015."

Biggest climate change march in NYC feels like something even bigger

Is it just us, or did something happen at that 2014 United Nations Climate Summit in New York City this week? The largest-ever climate change march took place in the city and the headlines were full of interesting items, from the famous oil family the Rockefellers divesting their charity from fossil fuels toGoogle telling ALEC goodbye over climate change lies. World leaders from wildly different countries gave speeches detailing what they plan to do on the issue of climate change. US president Obama said today that, "the climate is changing faster than our efforts to address it," and said that the US recognizes its role in creating the problem (see a video of his speech below).

Now, we know that climate change and automobiles are connected. That's not news. Still, the march and Summit let the Diesel Technology Forum take advantage of the moment to say that diesel vehicles can be a "key solution" in working to minimize climate change. We haven't heard anything specific from any of the major automakers tied in to the Summit, but that's par for the course. Still, there have been numerous announcements and reams of data issued this week. All important, of course, but sometimes doing all this reading about climate change just can't prepare you for seeing it in person.Now, we've seen lots of activists in the streets before and we've seen world leaders and powerful organizations (like, say, the Pentagon) issue dire warnings and promise action, but there's something about the discussion regarding climate change this week that feels different than it has before. Germany Proposes Free Parking to Spur Electric-Car Sales

"Germany is offering electric-car buyers the prospect of free parking as Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government seeks to boost demand for the vehicles.

The German cabinet today backed a bill that would enable municipalities to offer drivers of battery-powered cars, fuel cell vehicles and some plug-in hybrids privileges including parking and the right to use bus lanes, the Environment Ministry said today in an e-mailed statement.

“Electric cars will get their own labels so they’re recognizable to everyone,” Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt said in the statement. “Sales will rise amid an increasing selection of electric models and a growing number of e-cars on the roads.”

Germany, the focal point of the European auto industry, has set a goal of having 1 million electric vehicles on its roads by 2020, from about 21,000 at the start of the year. The goal is aimed at underscoring the country’s prowess in auto manufacturing as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions to meet climate-protection targets.

Transport, which accounts for about 16 percent of the country’s carbon-dioxide emissions, generated about 140 million metric tons of CO2 in 2012, from about 161 million tons in 2001.

The measures “can boost electric mobility,” Matthias Wissmann, president of the VDA auto industry group, said today in an e-mailed statement. The rules have to take effect quickly and apply nationally to convince customers, he said. Read more on Bloomberg."

DENZA, Daimler’s ‘made in China, for China’ electric vehicle, has started rolling off production line at Shenzhen BYD Daimler New Technology Co., Ltd. (BDNT), in Shenzhen.

This milestone is the culmination of cooperative efforts at Daimler’s technology joint venture with its Chinese partner BYD. The company is the first Sino-German joint venture dedicated to an all-electric vehicle in and for China, and targets raising the bar in the domestic electric vehicle market by combining Daimler’s renowned engineering expertise as global forerunner in safety and quality with BYD’s leading battery technology.

The quality of DENZA’s production is secured at a modern production line that follows Daimler’s proven production management system. Attention to quality is thereby extended to the complete supply chain and supported by significant investments into the latest technologies. For instance, through a Coordinate Measuring Machine whose precision is accurate up to 0.1 mm, the physical and geometrical characteristics of single parts and complete vehicles are assured to be compliant with defined requirements. Additionally, special on and off-the job training for staff, for example by Daimler’s local production joint ventures or specific HV processes and specialists, complete DENZA’s ‘quality first’ production philosophy.
