Lithium Race: Is This The All-Electric BMW i5?

AutoGiude.

AutoGuide reports on its findings of how the all-electric BMW i5 can look. Mercedes have made a lot of headlines recently with its new EQ electric brand and 10 electric cars coming by 2025. Volkswagen, after its best DieselGate advertisement campaign for electric cars,  promises to be good and to deliver 30 electric cars - if they survive the tide of litigation including $9 Billion in lawsuits from its own investors.  Lithium technology is here, but it is still more talk than best electric cars we can buy. GM Bolt will change it this year and Tesla Model 3 will ignite the race in the West later. We need millions of electric cars ASAP  and BMW i5 will be welcomed to the EV Team. BMW must make a bold move now just to stay relevant as Tesla Model S is already outselling Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7. They have just a few short years to deliver before China will start making EVs capable of earning respect in the West.  There are 25 companies which are making 51 models of EVs already in China with 200 developing 4,000 new EV models.  They are not Teslas yet but getting there very fast.

"Markets will be up and down, companies will come and go, but we are witnessing the historic moment of coming out of ICE-age in our transportation. We are talking here about the disruption of $4 trillion transportation industry based on Lithium Technology. Now it is time to check out where all this lithium will be coming from. And the answer: "From Panasonic" - will be better than: "From the underneath of Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada", but still the same like if electricity is coming just from the socket in your wall. Read more."

Lithium Race: Electric Cars Available Today And Coming In The West Vs China's 51 EVs You Can Buy Now.

"This picture above summarises very well the state of lithium race in the West now.  We are missing a few electric cars which you can buy in Europe for the full picture like Renault, Electric Mercedes B-Class and Electric Smart. But the general picture is right. We are moving into the fast lane for EVs mass market with the first two electric cars priced below $40k and with over 200 miles range: Chevy Bolt and Tesla Model 3. The big tide is coming, but progress was very slow before this year - we need millions of electric cars and very fast now. People are ready to buy the best EVs. Now we can compare this picture with China which is selling this year more than double amount  of electric cars than the US and Europe. They are not Teslas yet, but in China 25 companies are making 51 models of EVs today and 200 are developing another 4,000 EV models! When will Apple make its mind finally and change this new EV world overnight? I expect that this year we will reach a tipping point of 1,000,000 electric cars sold in the world in one year! Lithium is the magic metal at the very heart of this rEVolution and below you can find who is feeding this Switch. Read more."

Lithium Race: Daimler To Make More Than 10 Electric Cars By 2025.

"Finally, great Germans are talking about electric cars seriously. Daimler is going to leave DieselGate behind in the dust and produce 10 electric cars by 2025 reaching the goal of 15-25 percent of sales overall.  I do hope that they are seriously serious this time - I have seen all those beautiful prototypes in 2009 already.  Instead, after spending billions of dollars on hydrogen they all have chosen "Clean Diesel. " We are all trying to clean that mess now from our streets.
Volkswagen can lead by example now: if the company can survive all billions of dollars claimed in hundreds of lawsuits - "they are going to make millions of electric cars as well." I do really hope that they can all change - so far Elon Musk was taking on all those monsters of cancer hazard diesel pollution in the West in a very small team with Nissan-Renault and GM. China has managed to build EV industry from scratch and is now the leading electric cars manufacturing nation with sales approaching 500,000 this year.  Hopefully, we will be celebrating 1,000,000 EVs sold worldwide during 2016 in December.  Daimler is better to hurry before they will become totally irrelevant. Tesla Model S has already outsold Mercedes Class S last year! Lithium Race: We Can Get 1,000,000 Electric Cars Sold Worldwide In 2016.

EVObsession

"EV Obsession reports that now we have 500,000 electric cars in Europe. As you remember, I expect China to sell only this year 500,000 EVs with 207,000 already sold by August. Europe has 91,300 EVs sold by July and is taking the second place after China and before the U.S. with 93,197 EVs sold by September, which is now falling into the 3rd place. Europe will reach its 100,000 EVs sold faster than the U.S. this year. What is really interesting to note is that Renault Zoe is leading sales in Europe now with 14.2% market share. It is a nice car, but not the best electric cars can offer. Tesla Model S is at 8.7% of EU sales. It is the best electric car, but not affordable for the mass market by ant stretch of the imagination.
Now you can better realise why I am calling that the tide is coming after the release of GM Bolt and Tesla Model 3 following after that. For the first time, we will have two electric cars with more than 200 miles range and below $40k. Another very interesting point in this article that 250,000 EVs are estimated to be sold this year only in Europe! We are reaching the pivotal point on our way towards the mass market for electric cars and the total electrification of our transportation. We have now only over 1 million electric cars sold in all of our history. This year alone China can sell 500,000, now we can start talking that the U.S. will match Europe at least and we can have 1,000,000 electric cars sold just in 2016! China will see EVs sales accelerated after cleaning up its incentives scheme for the EVs makers earlier this year  and Tesla will be ramping up its production with GM selling Electric Chevy Bolts now as well.
Markets will be up and down, companies will come and go, but we are witnessing the historic moment of coming out of ICE-age in our transportation. Read more."

AutoGuide:

"A recent patent publication in Japan may have just revealed the BMW i5.
The patent has been registered to BMW and was originally filed earlier this year in April, but was just recently published. The images reveal a vehicle that looks similar to the i3, but is sleeker and a bit longer while sporting four doors – all styling characteristics that would fit in with an i5 model.
Since last year, there have been plenty of rumors and speculation on the BMW i5 and in last December, there was a report that the German automaker was in the “final stages” of making a decision on the body style.
At the time, BMW board member for sales and marketing, Ian Robertson, said the BMW i5 would either be a lengthened version of the i3 or a traditional sedan to rival the upcoming Tesla Model 3.
It is believed the BMW i5 will arrive sometime by 2020."

Lithium Race: Tesla Is Selling Twice As Many Electric Cars As It Was A Year Ago.

CNN reports that Tesla is selling twice as many electric cars as it was a year ago! The sales in Q3 are up 111%  to the record of 24,500 EVs compared with 11,603 sold last year in the same quarter. It looks like the famous now motivational email by Elon Musk is making its magic at Tesla as more than 5,000 Teslas reported to be in a transition already. Tesla is on track to sell 50,000 electric cars in the second half of 2016 and meet its target of 80,000 to 90,000 new Teslas cruising on the roads for the whole year.
This new achievement by Elon Musk and his Team at Tesla will contribute nicely to my expected 1,000,000 of electric cars being sold in 2016. China will claim at least 500,000 EVS in sales in 2016 and Europe will be racing for the 2nd place against the U.S. with roughly 250,000 in sales each hopefully.  In another important news, Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla is on track to meet its very ambitious goal of 500,000 electric cars made annually by 2018.  Now a lot of people will have to change their estimations for lithium demand. China is acting already and driving the new round of consolidation in "The New Lithium Top 5" where security of lithium supply is a major concern now.

Lithium 2.0: "New Lithium Top 5" Consolidation And Security Of Supply: FT "China's Tianqi Moves On Chile's SQM."

"FT reports that further round of competition for the security of lithium supply is driving the new wave of consolidation among our "New Lithium Top 5". With all political troubles in Chile Argentina is rising to the top lithium destination in the world now. Chinese Tianqi and Ganfeng were competing for the stake in SQM. Now we can see that Tianqi will pay 51% premium to get 2.6% for more than $200 million dollars in SQM. This move opens the doors to acquire more than 20% stake in SQM. I will be following on more details of this deal.

"Now you can better understand why the security for lithium supply becomes crucial for the industry leaders. Ganfeng Lithium and Tianqi have made it to the "New Lithium Top 5" this year and even pushed FMC down in the 5th place, according to Joe Lowry. Tianqi controls with Albemarle Talison  Lithium - a source of lithium raw material from hard rock mining in Australia. Now with Tianqi front running for the 23% stake at SQM - a source of lithium raw material from brine in Chile, we will have a new round of competition for the security of lithium supply. Reflecting on its political problems in Chile SQM moves to Argentina in J/V with Lithium Americas and Albemarle has just announced plans for the lithium exploration in Argentina.
International Lithium is building the vertically integrated lithium business with $4.5 Billion market cap giant from China Ganfeng Lithium, which is financing J/V operations in Argentina and Ireland. Below you can find more links on the Lithium Battery and raw materials space to make your own conclusions." Read more.

"International Lithium is getting noticed in the industry with our strategic partnership with Ganfeng Lithium from China. Ganfeng has made it into the "New Lithium Top 5" this year and now we have a new round of competition for the security of lithium supply with a further consolidation in the industry. Argentina becomes the top destination for the Lithium Supply development and our projects in Europe and Canada are moving fast forward now with our strategic partners.  We are drilling in Ireland after recent discoveries with Ganfeng and Pioneer Resources from Australia is advancing Mavis Lake and Raleigh Lake projects this year. ILC is one of the most active lithium exploration and development companies with CAD$17 million budgeted for the advance of our projects on the 3 continents.

CNN:

Tesla is selling twice as many cars as it was a year ago

"That's according to new performance numbers released by the company Sunday. The electric luxury car company said it delivered about 24,500 vehicles last quarter, compared to 11,603 during the same period last year.
Virtually all of Tesla's deliveries at that time last year were of its flagship Model S vehicle. And that's still a big ticket for the company -- Tesla sold 15,800 Model S cars in Q3 2016.
This quarter's totals were largely aided by the new Model X SUV, which launched in September 2015. Tesla made 8,700 Model X deliveries in its latest sales quarter.
Both the Model S and Model X, however, are still pricey propositions for would-be electric car buyers. The Model S starts at $66,000, while the Model X starts at $83,000.
Tesla (TSLA) remains an upstart in the industry. CEO Elon Musk is betting he can win big next year, when the company's first mass-market car, the Model 3, goes on sale. It starts at $35,000.
Musk's next car could face stiff competition. GM's new all-electric car, the Chevrolet Bolt, goes on sale later this year for $37,495.
Volkswagen is also looking to edge in on the electric car market. The automaker's I.D. is expected to cost less than $30,000. But it won't go on sale until 2020."

Lithium Race: GM Bolt Gets Translation In Europe - It Comes Out As Opel Ampera-e With 500 Km Of Range.

GM Bolt is getting translated in Europe at the Paris Motor Show and it is coming out as Opel Ampera-e  with a very impressive 500 km of range on a charge. Hopefully, it will now contribute to the 1,000,000 EVs sold next year all over the world. The new electric car from GM for the European market will be launched in 2017. Unfortunately, it will not be available for the UK. If GM is serious about electric cars now it is time to make as many of them as they can. Tesla Model 3 is years away from the European market and Opel Ampera-e will have a great headstart. Renault Zoe is the best selling electric car in Europe this year and now it will compete with Opel Ampera-e with its new improved lithium battery providing 400 km of range. With its 500 km of range, GM will not have any significant competition at the moment  for Opel Ampera-e apart from Tesla Model S with more than double the price tag.

Lithium Race Towards Mass Market For Electric Cars: Chevy Bolt EV Comes Cruising With 238 Miles Of Range!

"We have another infusion of healthy lithium based news for the electric cars to beat the Autumn blues in the markets. GM has delivered Chevy Bolt in style with 238 miles of range! It is the great news for the electric cars and now we will have the official competition started between GM and Tesla. Model 3 is still many months  away and GM Bolt will have a head start.  Will the U.S. be able to compete with China in EVs race now?  China is already over 207,000 EVs sold this year by August and the U.S. is still looking to cross 100,000 milestone afters sales up to September. To put things into perspective: there are only over 1 million electric cars sold during all of the humankind history, This year alone China can cross 500,000 EVs sales mark! GM Bolt now will ignite the next stage in this race in the U.S. first and with the release of Ampera in Europe as well. We are moving into the mass market stage with two electric cars capable of 200 miles range now with GM Bolt and Tesla Model 3. In China, 25 companies are making now 51 models of electric cars and 200 companies are developing another 4,000 models of EVs. This coming tide will lift our spirits in the lithium industry with the rising prices again. Read more."

Lithium Race And Battery Assault.

"David Fickling made a great article connecting the real story of Lithium Race in China with Warren Buffett's BYD and Tesla in the U.S. Our very small industry is growing so fast now, that quite a few numbers and charts in his article are already off the scale.  My followers would point out that Elon Musk has already announced that Tesla can make a lithium battery with all-in-cost for $190 per kWh! GM has announced earlier this year that LG Chem can go as low as $145 per kWH for its Bolt lithium battery, but only for the lithium cells alone. Gigafactory now will actually produce 50 GWh of lithium batteries by 2018 and 150 GWh by 2022! I will provide a few links and charts with the latest numbers to make it clear why the Lithium 2.0 launch is for real this time. Read more."

Energy rEVolution: Warren Buffett's BYD Unveils Its Lithium B-BOX Energy Storage System In The UK.

BYD B-Box.

China is leading the Lithium Race and Warren Buffett-backed BYD is the front runner as the number one manufacturer of electric cars. Sales of electric cars are going exponentially and now BYD is taking on Energy Storage which promises to be an even larger market for lithium batteries in the future. In this press release, BYD is pushing its LiFePo4 technology: as we have discussed after Samsung Galaxy Lithium Battery scare - Chinese companies are advancing this particular lithium chemistry which is more stable than others, but you have to sacrifice in specific energy and energy density of the cell.
B-Box is not as sexy as Tesla Powerwall, but will do the job and presented as a utility unit. Modular design gives flexibility of several modules in one battery rack. Rated battery energy comes in 2.5kWh, 5kWh, 7.5kWh or 10kWh and you can  easily scale up with a few racks to 409 kWh. Energy efficiency comes at 97%. Now the pricing competition and mass volume production of lithium batteries will determine the speed of The Switch to renewables. Lithium technology is here and cheap batteries change everything.
It is important to note that BYD is marketing its Energy Storage product as a response to the myopic decisions of the UK government reducing support for the Solar industry and aiming to improve the return on investment in Solar Power Generation.
BYD provides a very interesting data that it already has an annual capacity of 10GWh for LiFePo4 technology. To put this number in perspective: Tesla Gigafactory 1 will produce 50 GWh in 2018 and 150 by 2020. BYD is building a few new Lithium Megafactories now and Chinese companies have announced in the first half of 2016 that 120 GWh of lithium batteries capacity will be coming online by 2018.
Now you can better understand the level of competition even among Chinese companies scrambling the globe to secure the best lithium resources to feed this Energy rEVolution. New Energy Plan has already made China the Center of Lithium Universe and it will have the far-reaching implications in the future. Two Chinese companies have finished "The Old Lithium Big 3" and now Ganfeng Lithium and Tianqi are part of "The New Lithium Top 5." International Lithium is building the vertically integrated lithium business with Ganfeng Lithium. Below you can find the links to the information who is making all those lithium batteries and why now the security of lithium supply is the major part of this strategic New Energy plan.

Big Ideas For BREXIT: How Do Solar Panels Work Even In England?

"I would like to share this primer on Solar Power Generation with our best minds in the UK busy now to find the way for Britain to become The Great again. Hard work, the first level of physics and some guidance from Elon Musk will do the trick now.  Cheap lithium batteries change everything and now EVs are moving into the mass market with GM Bolt and Tesla Model 3. Solar power is here to charge them and lithium battery storage technology makes it 24/7.
It is called The New Energy in China and is a part of the 5-year plans which are exercised with military discipline for the last few decades. Electric Cars, Solar and Wind power with lithium battery domination are all parts of the building of this strategic industry in China to rule in the 21st century. Why the UK can't bring its act together and learn fast from the best practices and avoid costly mistakes?
BOE will print money anyway, just give it to the people who will create jobs and the future for the UK, not to the bankers who have already lost it and will waste it "repairing" their balance sheets. Watch the video."

Warren Buffett's BYD Dominates Lithium Race: EVs Sales Doubled Again In August - New Record Set Of 10,545 Sold.

InsideEVs

InsideEVs reports about China's New Energy plan in action. Warren Buffett's BYD leads lithium race with EVs sales  doubled again in August to the record of 10,545. With more than 63,500 EVs sold this year, BYD has already exceeded last year total sales of 59,000.
BYD has become the number one EVs manufacturer in the world in May of this year. Now we can put these numbers into perspective: we have just celebrated a month ago that GM has sold 100,000 Chevy Volts from 2009. Tesla is making headlines with its push to sell this year 80,000 - 90,000 of its electric cars.  Now you can understand why the real lithium race is happening in China and we can have 5,000,000 electric cars over there by 2025.
I expect that this year we be the bifurcation point and we will see 1,000,000 electric cars sold over the world - we have just over 1,000,000 EVs on all our roads in the world sold during all our history! It will ignite the mass market for electric cars with GM Bolt and Tesla Model 3 joining the race.  China will be the leader with its 25 companies already making 51 models of EVs and 200 companies working on the development of 4,000 new EVs.  China has sold 207,000 EVs by August of this year ahead of Europe with  91,300 EVs sold by July and the US with 93,197 EVs sold by September. Two Chinese companies have finished "The Old Lithium Big 3" and now Ganfeng Lithium and Tianqi are part of "The New Lithium Top 5." Below you can find the links to the information who is making all those lithium batteries and why now the security of lithium supply is the major part of this strategic New Energy plan.

Lithium Race: China Wants 3 Million Electric Cars On Road By 2025.

"I guess that it is the case that whatever China wants they will get. In the case of electric cars with all the best central planning can get they will be there much faster. I am expecting that China will sell 500,000 only in this year. And we will see 1,000,000 electric cars sold worldwide in 2016. They have sold already 207,000 by August in 2016! Bloomberg is even more optimistic on the chat above. I will throw my own number - China will have at least 5 million electric cars by 2025. Why - just stay with me for a while. These twenty minutes can change your next 20 years of life. If Tony Seba is correct: all new cars sold by 2025 will be electric.
There is a state-level military plan in action in China to leapfrog ICE-age technology directly into the post carbon world with its New Energy Plan. It is a part of strategic planning on the state-level within Five Year Plans. New Energy is based on Solar, Wind and Electric Cars. Military style planning includes the whole commodity chain starting with Lithium Raw Materials - Ganfeng Lithium and Tianqi are investing all over the globe to secure lithium supply. Lithium Chemicals including for lithium batteries production - China is number 1 in the world already including Ganfeng Lithium and Tianqi making it into "The New Lithium Top 5." Lithium Batteries - Now Warren Buffett's BYD is chasing Panasonic and new coming Megafactories in China from CATL, BYD, Foxconn, Boston Power, A123, LG Chem and  Panasonic will make China the center of Lithium Universe for many years ahead. Electric Cars - there are 25 companies which are making 51 models of EVs already in China and 200 companies are developing 4,000 new EV models.
This is what I call a serious exercise of a structural shift in the economy, driving internal consumption by building a 21st-century manufacturing base in Solar, Wind and Electric Cars and growing its middle class who will produce and consume all those beautiful cars. Now they will be able to breathe a fresh air as well. Welcome to Henry Ford idea with the state level implementation of new lithium technology and 1.4 billion people who would like to be happy and only starting to consume a fraction of the goods compare to the West.
I am preaching for the same approach here in the West for years. My dog is listening to me every time, but even him got bored already. Nothing is perfect anywhere, but you better check it out and learn fast: while we are still fighting DieselGate after one year from its mass media discovery, Red Dragon is flying fast and high picking up the best lithium projects, technology and brains to feed its new appetite for growth. Links below will provide you with my ideas where this growth will lead us  and what will be the diet for this hungry creature. For those who is a long time here - we are coming back to our main investment thesis. It is very difficult to handle dragons: they are naughty, moody and can fry you just by trying to kiss. It is a better business to run a grocery store and feed them well. This New Energy domination plan will require a lot of Lithium and Copper and this is where my research is leading me to as well now. Read more."

BYD Unveils Its B-BOX Energy Storage System In The UK.

Recently announcing it is to supply the city of London with Europe’s largest pure electric bus fleet, BYD and its brand is becoming familiar to many across the UK. BYD Company Ltd. is not only the world’s largest EV maker – with sales of nearly 63,000 units of passenger EVs in 2015 and its pure electric buses and taxis running in over 200 cities worldwide – it is also the world's largest manufacturer of rechargeable Lithium Iron-Phosphate batteries, used to power both its electric vehicle line-up and a range of energy storage systems.
BYD’s energy storage systems have established an unrivalled reputation in countries that place sustainable development on top of their energy agendas; chiefly Germany, Spain, Austria and Australia. BYD has now officially launched its “B-BOX” in the UK – an energy storage system for household and commercial applications featuring the same battery technology used in buses running throughout central London. The first UK installation of the system is at the Waxman Energy showroom (BYD’s distribution partner), based in Elland, West Yorkshire, Waxman’s Sales Director, Mark Powell, comments: "after comparing other home energy storage systems, we chose the BYD B-BOX for its safety, reliability and, most importantly, the flexibility to extend its capacity in the future if needed."
The main feature and key advantage of the B-Box is the battery’s Lithium Iron-Phosphate (LFP) chemistry, which grants high thermal stability, making it the safest on the market. These batteries are safe under extreme physical conditions and withstand temperatures of several hundred degrees; a thermal stability that allows for a long life-span of over 6,000 cycles. The B-BOX is also flexible; the capacity of a single unit can be expanded from 2.5Kwh to 409Kwh by adopting a modular design which makes it suitable for diversified demands. As for performance, main advantages include a high usable capacity of up to 96%, as well as a power output of up to 1C.
"We believe the B-BOX is very suitable for the UK market," said Julia Chen, Senior Director of BYD Battery Sales Division, "with such global track record and positive market feedback, we have every reason to believe the B-BOX will do great in the UK." 2016 has seen the rebirth of the tandem of solar power generation with energy storage, enabling a broad scope of applications from domestic to medium and large-scale commercial projects. The B-BOX is BYD's response to the UK market's dramatic drop in government subsidies for renewable energy projects and a shifted focus towards home and business users to maximize their return on solar PV investments. Currently BYD is partnering with Waxman for distribution and SREnergy for after-sales services in the UK.
