Joe Lowry: The Lithium Market - What's Next?

Global Lithium.

Joe Lowry shares with us today another brilliant article about the state of Lithium Supply and Demand in the days when, finally ALL Auto-makers know that they cannot meet standards limiting toxic cancer hazard emissions. The ICE based technology just has reached its thermodynamic limits. Auto-makers not only know it, but they have admitted it in Europe this week in the most disgusting fashion by lobbying their dirty friends among politicians to DOUBLE toxic cancer hazard emissions from Diesel Cars and to delay their implementation.
Electric Cars have reached The Point Of No Return. How many people will we save before The Silicon Valley economics will make all cars electric is up to all of us now. We need cheaper and better electric cars, we need mass market for EVs. We need volume. Where the lithium will be coming from to make it possible? Joe Lowry has his insider knowledge about it. We are just making it happen at International Lithium with our strategic partner Ganfeng Lithium $1.7 Billion market cap giant from China.
The future is electric and if you would like to know more this weekend, you can find links below and Joe will be your guide in his  "Opaque Kingdom of Lithium".  Joe Lowry estimates 88% increase in lithium demand in 5 years and "The industry is approaching a full blown shortage situation" - according to him.  Stay tuned as I will cut out a few tracks this weekend and maybe even some serious staff will be on our AC/DC digital waves soon.

"The Chinese Power Players – Tianqi and Ganfeng: The Chinese market is the largest in the lithium world and these two companies are the leaders in the Middle Kingdom which make them defacto “majors”. Tianqi owns 51% of Talison which solidifies their position as a major factor in the global upstream market. Ganfeng is the world’s largest lithium metal producer, a major supplier in the Asia downstream lithium market and increasingly important as a global upstream player. Joe Lowry."

Joe Lowry: Citi's Recent Lithium Report - Read It With Caution.

"Joe Lowry from Global Lithium is giving his take on latest CITI research on Lithium Industry. Lithium is finally making its way on the Wall Street and into Institutional Portfolios. Those who makes it right now will be able to enjoy The Electric Future later. Joe Lowry is the must follow for his sober insider's outlook into the realities of our Lithium Industry. Read more."

Joe Lowry: The 2015 Lithium Awards.

Joe Lowry has produced another brilliant illustration on the state of the Lithium market just before the major technological shift in a few Trillion dollar industries which is happening all at once now: Communication, Transportation and Energy. You can find more about the real news from the Lithium Industry on his Twitter feed and LinkedIn page and on the links below. The whole world is going Electric and Lithium Is The Magic Metal at the very heart of this rEVolution.
Ganfeng Lithium is strategic partner of International Lithium, holds 17.5% in our company and finances now two J/V projects with ILC in Ireland and Argentina. Stay tuned for our new developments.

Joe Lowry: China - The New Center of the Lithium Universe?

"I am back from all the latest disruptions. Somebody on Twitter wrongly got my slogan: Join Disruption Or Be Disrupted and they started Censoring me on DieselGate and Volkswagen scandals. Now it is on the Capitol Hill and I loved one representative asking Volkswagen U.S. CEO during his testimony: "What are you going to read in jail". Lets courts do their job. Prosecutors have already raided Volkswagen in Germany today. For us the one thing is very important now: all cost accounted, including medical bills and damage to the planet, Electric Cars are already better and cheaper than the ones with Internal Combustion Engines (ICE).
Now I can get back to business and would like to share with you Joe Lowry's article on Lithium and my thoughts on China's military plan how to build Electric Cars as Strategic Industry for Post Carbon Economy and Next Industrial rEVolution. Read more."

International Lithium and Ganfeng: Argentina's Mine Industry Doubles Down on Lithium

International Lithium Corp. - A Green-Energy Metals Company.

"I have written extensively about International Lithium and our strategic partner Ganfeng Lithium. Our J/Vs in Argentina and Ireland are financed by this giant from China and we have very important access to the technology. Basically we are building the secure supply chain for Ganfeng Lithium using their expertise in raw materials needed for production of battery grade lithium from the very beginning. Our brine bulk sample from Mariana is being tested at Ganfeng state-of-the-art R&D facilities in China and in Ireland we have identified 22 exploration targets. Now, according to our latest NR, we are waiting for the approval of the budgets for both projects to be rapidly advanced after very encouraging results were received from the last exploration stage this year.

Today I would like to show you another side of International Lithium. We have the very strong technical team headed by our CEO Gary Schellenberg. Anthony Kovac - our COO and John Harrop - our VP of Exploration are among very few top level exploration managers and geologists in lithium sector. This Team depth has allowed International lithium to attract Ganfeng and strike two major J/V deals in all our industry. These days we are getting the first fruits of this very hard work. Coming volume shows that market is waking up and we are receiving at least some recognition of the value we have been building all these years.
I am talking a lot about the security of lithium supply and Tesla Lithium Hydroxide Supply Deal is another proof and was noticed by market overnight. Now venture capital is knocking on all doors chasing the upstream supply chain for electric cars and Energy rEVolution.
We have another great project at International Lithium: Mavis Lake Lithium And Tantalum Project which is located in mining friendly Canada in the area with excellent infrastructure and very encouraging initial exploration results with high grade Lithium and Tantalum. It will be our next strategic advance for the company. With J/Vs moving forward we are looking for the strong Strategic Partner to develop this project for the potential supply of this strategic commodity for the ongoing Next Industrial rEVolution. West will wake up one day to the fact that China has managed to control now not only over 90% of REE production, but 75% of Battery Grade Lithium Hydroxide as well.
Security of Supply means exactly this - Security. When the price is taking the second consideration and availability of critical materials is taking the central stage. My personal mission is to make this Security happen for the Western world for real as well, even if this part of the World still lives by HFT rules and Q by Q performance reflecting the coming bonuses. Our Asian friends are beating us all here with the state-level plans looking for The Next Fifty Years and building new strategic industries like Electric Cars in China.
We have Elon Musk, we need more like him, but it is a very good start. Our strategic partner for Mavis Lake is waiting somewhere in between of latest Q performance reviews. If you know the one - you know whom to call. Now I do not have really to explain any more What Is Lithium For - Elon Musk has made the great job and every single Tesla Model S is the best moving ad of the things to come. All cars will be electric and it will be very soon. And by the way any new hard rock mine for Lithium will take 5-7 years to build Lithium brine operations will take 4-5 years at best.
Why International Lithium? You can check presentation above. Read more."

Ganfeng Increases Stake In Avalonia Lithium Project, Ireland And Finalizes Exploration Loan Agreement With International Lithium For Mariana Lithium Project, Argentina.

"Mr. Kirill Klip, President, International Lithium Corp. comments, “The restructuring of our loan facilities with strategic partner Ganfeng Lithium provides ILC with financial relief and access to capital through the long term Exploration loan. In Argentina, all political candidates running in the upcoming elections are echoing the importance of mining and foreign investment to that country, something I view as very positive for our Mariana project. In Europe there is a growing concern that emissions standards are not being met with the clean diesel scandal paving the way for electric cars powered by lithium batteries. This gives our Avalonia project in Ireland strategic importance. Together with Ganfeng Lithium we continue to work towards supplying lithium as a raw material for clean power technologies in Europe and around the world.”

Joe Lowry:

The Lithium Market - What's Next?

"I have spent the majority of my career in the lithium business. Twenty years ago if someone asked me what business I was in and I said “lithium” – it usually generated a quizzical look and a shrug or a question about bi-polar disorder. In 1995, lithium certainly wasn’t mainstream. Today it is easy for people to relate to lithium since it powers IPhones, tablets, and Tesla. Although the average person in 2015 is familiar with lithium, 99.999% of the people on the planet can’t name a lithium company nor do they care where the lightest metal comes from.
On the other hand, the .001% of the population who knows or cares about lithium, generally speaking, has limited access to meaningful information about the main players or their competitive positions and future prospects.
Consumers of lithium chemicals have long complained about the “secret club” they imagine controls lithium supply from proverbial “smoke filled rooms”. The major lithium suppliers which until recently were called the “Big 3” clearly did not work together effectively to control price for most of the past fifteen years. In my opinion their arrogance and short sightedness often caused them to sub optimize their obvious market power.
The predictions of a green energy driven “lithium boom” almost a decade ago led to dozens of projects that resulted in well over 1 billion (US) dollars of investment in completely failed or minimally productive assets around the world. The failed lithium projects (think: Canada Lithium, Qinghai, Tibet Zabuye, Galaxy, etc) as well as projects that lingered but never got adequate financing to produce (think: Nemaska, Western Lithium, LAC, Simbol, etc) in addition to botched expansions of existing resources like FMC’s left the industry in a situation where there is currently insufficient capacity to support the now nascent lithium boom. The obvious result - price is moving up.
Since the “lithium boom” did not occur when predicted and is now only in its infancy , the failed capacity additions are just beginning to be felt in the market. The industry is approaching a full blown shortage situation - especially since lithium is not necessarily a fungible commodity like gold or sweet crude oil. All lithium is not created equal even if it meets a similar chemical spec. If you don’t believe me, ask a cathode producer who looks at morphology and stability of impurity profiles not just assay. In total supply seems to stay in balance with demand to 2020 but mix issues will cause short term pain and higher prices. You are likely to see some major lithium consumers on future episodes of "Hoarders". Check your local listings...
So where do we go from here? Some of it you have heard before. Let’s take a quick look:
SQM – is the only member of the former “Big 3” with a clear strategy that is being executed. Despite a plethora of issues with the government and a down cycle for their core ag related businesses, SQM continues to be a major force in the lithium industry. SQM knows who they are and will continue to run a very profitable upstream lithium business while they sort out their long term issues. The run up in carbonate and hydroxide price will go straight to their bottom line.
Albemarle – what I have called the “lithium superpower” seems on the verge of turning their proverbial lithium “sword” into ploughshares. For non-native English speakers this simply means it looks like they are losing their strength by choice (or bad decisions). Yes, it is hard to understand especially after they have bet the future of the company on the Rockwood acquisition. Rockwood will continue to be very profitable short term but not profitable enough long term in my opinion to overcome the high acquisition cost and things like an expansion that will not produce significant volume until 2017 . The flawed hydroxide tolling strategy from high cost suppliers is designed to bridge ALB until their curious plan for a 50,000 MT LCE spodumene based plant is on-line. According to ALB's CEO, the new plant isn't likely to produce until the next decade. Time's wasting.
ALB is in the process of cutting loose most of Rockwood’s key management and technical talent developed over decades. That would be ok if they had a team to replace the departed talent in kind. They don't.
Good luck ALB as you appear to be transitioning from the Lithium Superpower to the “Roman Empire of the Lithium World”.
The Chinese Power Players – Tianqi and Ganfeng: The Chinese market is the largest in the lithium world and these two companies are the leaders in the Middle Kingdom which make them defacto “majors”. Tianqi owns 51% of Talison which solidifies their position as a major factor in the global upstream market. Ganfeng is the world’s largest lithium metal producer, a major supplier in the Asia downstream lithium market and increasingly important as a global upstream player.
FMC Lithium – The sad story of a great franchise being decimated with each passing year by continual missteps. This is a “Frog Prince” tale with no one on the horizon to break the spell. FMC Lithium is now a stepchild that could potentially flourish with a supportive adoptive parent. FMC's 3rd Quarter earnings call on 10/29 continued to have the standard "happy talk" about the future of lithium while they delivered $1.8 million in earning on $57 million in sales. Results speak louder than words.
It is hard to function as a "noncore" business in a company whose stock has fallen from the mid-$80s to mid-$30s in the recent past.  FMC should sell but likely wants too much for a  damaged asset.
Orocobre – very late to market, over budget and with higher costs than anticipated yet the lithium world yearns for another brine based major. ORE could be the star of 2016 if they can produce more than 10,000 MT economically. No other lithium company has  had the opportunity ORE currently has - to enter the market at time when the capacity addition will not lower price. ORE - the biggest question mark in the lithium world.
Two of the companies listed above are looking to ORE for "third party" sourcing but why supply your neighbors when you can achieve a higher yield going directly to customers?
Juniors – Western Lithium and LAC. The merger is still 2+2 = 3 in my opinion. Simbol – is the “better mousetrap” that will likely never be built. Projects in Argentina lack investment due to political chaos. Tesla’s two virtual suppliers (the names that shall not be named) on “contingent contract” are unlikely to produce. Et Tu Elon…..
In any case, Chinese suppliers will keep expanding and despite their high costs, lithium supply will be, for the most part, adequate to bridge the supply gap at much higher prices until lower cost capacity comes on-line early in the coming decade.
There is one project  I believe has excellent prospects to supply by 2018 but that is a story for another day."

EU Corruption, DieselGate And Lithium Technology: How It's Made - BMWi i3 LifeDrive Architecture.

I would like to share with you this great video today. German auto-makers can do wonderful things too, not only cheating devices at Volkswagen. BMWi program is the very big step forward after billions have been wasted on Hydrogen and "'Clean Diesel." But can you imagine how much more brilliant engineers from BMW can do if corrupted politicians were not allowed to stop the progress like they did for 20 years in U.S. and this week in EU? Do you even know that EU governments have DOUBLED allowed toxic emissions limits for diesel and delayed their implementation this week? Lithium Technology is here - we have just to vote for it for real and push elected by us politicians to endorse it on our behalf and you have this power now. Just stop buying all that cancer hazard spitting air polluting rubbish any more.

On a technical note, I do admire BMW LifeDrive architecture and new technologies in BMW i3. BMW must have a better battery and longer range. Cheaper battery can bring BMW i3 price down - it is still too expensive for urban commute electric car. Cheaper Lithium Batteries can come only with mass volume of production. Exactly like Elon Musk is doing with Tesla Gigafactory. Would you like to build yours? Welcome to Ireland! International Lithium with Ganfeng will get the lithium supply ready for your brave eDrive plans.
BMW has to make something real in between BMW i3 and i8 just to stay relevant and be able to compete with Tesla Model S and Model X now and not in twenty years time. Now you can better realise how far Tesla is ahead.  BMW i8 has a beautiful body, but last century technology. Who needs Diesel Engine in "Electric Car" any more? Just look at Tesla again!
Dear BMW, please, just do it - just let your brilliant engineers made the best electric cars. Stop looking with half an eye on all your diesel monstrosity - "we have to sell them to". You could easily get Tesla Powertain for BMW i8 years ago if you were serious. Like Mercedes did, but where are all those beautiful EVs? The same goes to all your BMW i4, i5, i6 and i7. I guess with our EU corrupted puppets on the payroll of The Used To Be Great Autos who are protecting billions wasted in "Clean Diesel" Technology Elon Musk will get to the Mars sooner than you move for real in Electric Cars space. But people will not allow you to fool us any more. Dear Mercedes, BMW and VW, have a look at Volkswagen's loss last quoter and these couple of articles below. The time has come even for you to go electric!

Volkswagen DieselGate Fallout: Second Shock - Tesla Model S Takes On Mercedes S, Outsold BMW 7 And Audi 8.

"This news will be shock for a lot of people. Electric cars made by Tesla are just better than comparable luxury brands. All this data is for the whole 2015 up to September. Volkswagen scam is not even reflected in consumer behaviour! Tesla Model S is taking on Mersedes S already, outselling Audi 8 and BMW 7 by a very big margins. Welcome to The Silicon Valley Economics. Now this trend will only accelerate.  To pay yourself to poison your kids with cancer hazard pollution is quite stupid after all.
Next step is to go for the mass market for electric cars, Tesla Model 3 will start it. The average price for a new car in U.S. was $23k in 2014. My magic formula is 20/200. $20k buys you BMW 2 type electric car with 200 miles range. Elon Musk will make it possible with dramatically reduced cost for Lithium Batteries to as low as $100 per kWh made at Tesla Gigafactory. If he will be able to commercialise Solid State Lithium Battery technology we are up for the real treat. Than Tesla Model S And X will go more than 500 miles on a charge very soon! Lithium is the magic metal at the very heart of this rEVolution. Read more."

Volkswagen And DieselGate: The Solution - Lithium Technology Is Here To Change Our World.

"All major corporate crimes can be committed only when the masses are silent being busy digesting fast food with video games and Facebook "friends". Or deeper: when corporate slavery affects your own perspective from the cubicle so much that you think that it is Not Evil any more…

If somebody in Power does really want it, we have all technology and solutions available now. If somebody in Power was allowed by the Corporations who paid her ticket there - we have all the money to make it. Just take all costs of all Wars - yes, they all about Control of Energy and Oil means Energy to us even now. Add here all Trillions in tax breaks and subsidies provided to Fossil Fuel Industries. Nuclear will go here as well. Add all billions wasted on Hydrogen - it will be controlled by the same Old Big Oil, I will not even talk about the very low energy efficiency of full Energy cycle of Hydrogen To Wheel today. Add here all medical bills for cancer and other chemical pollution related deceases. It will be enough for a very good and fast start to the race into the post carbon world!
Invest this money into Electric Cars, Solar and Wind. Put trucks on the Natural Gas first and Hybrids later. Move to the real Energy Security with distributed Solar and Wind power generation. Close all coal plants and nuclear as well. Use the Sun: Solar and Wind power costs are dropping like a stones now, why do we have to live still in the stone age in cages provided by Big Oil and Fossils? It was supposed to be over - the stone age, and not due to the lack of stones, we have the technology to make it without burning fossil fuels now. Read more"

DieselGate And Corruption: EU Governments Double And Delay Air Pollution Limits For Diesel Cars.

Erik Jonnaert, ACEA Secretary General

"Exhaust from diesel engines contributes to air pollution and is a cancer hazard to humans," said DrKurt StraifForbes.

"EU governments have demonstrated today one more time that corruption is without borders and party limits. It is the very bad decision and totally diminish our politicians, who has lost today any credibility, to the status of corporate puppets on payroll. The only good news is that this act of treason on part of politicians against the public health just demonstrates that ICE technology just can't deliver any more, it has reached its limitations. Fossils are not only among fuels. Now you all will be sold even more polluting rubbish and our streets will be even more dangerous filled with cancer hazard toxic emissions. Your hard earned money will go to support those dirty politicians killing your kids. Just stop buying it and spread the word. Donate your RT. Read more."

Volkswagen, DieselGate And Now AutoGate: Car Emissions Testing - "The Whole System Is Corrupt"

"London smog: 'We spend billions per year on tests in a lab. Useless … We want to clean up the environment, not the labs' (Photo: stu mayhem)" - euobserver.

No surprises, here for me unfortunately. Peter Teffer reports straight from the heart of "EU Capital" in Brussels:

"Volkswagen is not the only car company that used illegal devices to cheat emissions tests, said Axel Friedrich, a German emissions testing expert who is a co-founder of the NGO that notified US authorities something was wrong with VW's test results.
"You will see tomorrow night on German television the next case", Friedrich said on Wednesday (21 October) in the European Parliament.
"It's not only diesel, it's also gasoline. The whole system is corrupt", he added."

Citi's Recent Lithium Report - Read it with Caution

"The investing world is hungry for information about the lithium industry. Citibank has a well recognized global brand in banking so when they publish something on lithium, people pay attention. Recently Citi released "Lithium-The Future is Electric". There is a lot of interesting research in the report and I would suggest reading it - with caution. It is hard to separate the wheat from the chaff.
The report is being quoted by many who write about lithium one day and perhaps, the Westminster Dog Show, the next. Similar to the 1990s adage "nobody ever got fired for buying IBM"; it seems many casual writers about lithium believe that if: "Citi says it, it must be correct". The problem is Citi does not know lithium and even some of their referenced sources don't know lithium very well either.
I could mention numerous issues with the Citi report but will focus on just one:
Citi's Lithium Cost Curve
First the good news, the costs for SQM and ALB are close to reality. The Orocobre cost (even with the caveat that the cost curve is by capacity not production) is so far off that Citi clearly is out of its depth writing on this subject. The other brine costs shown are much lower than reality as are the spodumene based costs. Well at least Citi is close on the two major carbonate producers but the margin of error on the other names listed is cause for alarm."
You may want to bank with Citi but you should probably consider Benchmark or Signum Box if you want to get high quality lithium reports. I have no interest (financial or otherwise) in either company; however I do recommend them to clients on a regular basis.
Despite all the issues with Citi's report, they got the theme correct - lithium's future is electric."

Lithium Race: Nissan And The Future Of Intelligent Driving - The IDS 60 kWh Concept Car.

The more we have beautiful electric cars - the better. This concept car from Nissan looks really great, but we need them all on our streets ASAP! We are being all seriously poisoned now with cancer hazard diesel pollution. And it will be only worse, just yesterday EU has doubled the allowed limits for diesel emissions! Tesla is moving full ahead and its Model S is already driving on autopilot. Nissan Leaf has done a lot to start the electric cars rolling on our streets, new upgrade to 30 kWh lithium battery extending the range will help to market this car. But I think Nissan has to do more if they would like to be ready to compete with GM Bolt and Tesla Model 3. It is my very personal opinion, but Nissan Leaf feels too much "plastic EV", not "like the normal car, but better"! It would be great if Nissan will come out with the new body as well for its rumoured 500 km range lithium battery. To have this rEVolution for real we must have more cars approaching my magic 20/200 formula: when $20k buys you BMW 2 type car with 200 miles range.

Tesla Motors: Our Mission - To Make All Cars Electric. Tesla Model 3: Third Time's A Charge.

Elon Musk is charging into the mass market for electric cars with its Tesla Model 3. Are you still wondering why all cars will be electricTesla Motors CTO JB Straubel has made his best video explaining it all in depth: Tesla's History, Lithium Technology and Tesla Energy to bring the Sun, Wind and other renewables to power our rEVolution. Tesla was created not just to produce the very expensive luxury best cars in the world which happen to be electric. It has the mission to make it possible for all cars to be electric. Today I would like to introduce Tesla Model 3 which will bring us the mass market in electric cars properly. Enjoy!
And if you would like to know more where the lithium will come from to power all this rEVolution and disruption of the few Trillion dollar industries, be my guest on my blog and the links below. Lithium technology has made it possible to store electricity - the most efficient form of energy known to us. Now lithium batteries will become cheaper and it changes everything.

Petrol and Diesel are fuels and they are consumed every time in Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) with very low efficiency and very dangerous carcinogenic air pollution as a result. In contrast, Lithium battery is the technology providing ability to store energy very efficiently, which is produced somewhere else on the industrial scale with very high efficiency and from renewable sources as the ultimate goal. On the map above you can see the future - this is how much space we need to power all the World by Solar Power with available technology today! It brings us the ability to create the Real Energy Security with distributed Solar and Wind energy systems. Tesla Energy makes it possible now. Some people just prefer you not to think about it.

With Oil we have always dirty politicians and Fracking lobbyists from big old corporations drafting policies for us and our kids to bring democracy to the countries which happen to have a lot of Oil. Fossils are not only Fuels. It is time for a real change now. With Lithium Technology we have the Silicon Valley economics at work. If you put brilliant minds, technology, science and capital together wonderful things are happening. We all enjoy these products today.

Now it is time for Energy Sector. All prices for Wind, Solar and Lithium batteries are going down every year in contrast to the very volatile Oil prices and all other costs accounted in relation to it including never ending wars just to control the Energy Supply. Now we have the choice, nobody can stop it any more. "They" will try everything to delay it, but its now in the Other Realm. The Force of science, natural thermodynamics laws and economics make it unstoppable.  It is for you to choose it for your kids.
We are Legion, donate your RT - all together we can make it faster.

Lithium Race: Tesla’s JB Straubel - Most People At Tesla Now Working On Model 3.

"I would like to share today another great presentation from Tesla CTO JB Straubel presented by InsideEVs. In the very beginning of his talk you can see the great video from Tesla Motors about the company and even robots building electric cars in action! The future is here and it is electric. Cheaper lithium batteries change everything for Electric Cars and Solar power. Lithium is the magic metal at the very heart of this rEVolution. Watch the video"

Today at the Tokyo Motor Show 2015, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. unveiled a concept vehicle that embodies Nissan's vision of the future of autonomous driving and zero emission EVs: the Nissan IDS Concept.
Presenting at the show, Nissan president and CEO Carlos Ghosn said: "Nissan's forthcoming technologies will revolutionize the relationship between car and driver, and future mobility."
After leading the development and expansion of EV technology, Nissan once again stands at the forefront of automotive technology. By integrating advanced vehicle control and safety technologies with cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI), Nissan is among the leaders developing practical, real-world applications of autonomous drive technology.
In August 2013, Ghosn said that by 2020 Nissan plans to equip innovative autonomous drive technology on multiple vehicles. Progress is well on track to achieve this goal.
Nissan Intelligent Driving is Nissan's concept of autonomous drive technology and represents what Nissan believes next-generation vehicles should be. "Nissan Intelligent Driving improves a driver's ability to see, think and react. It compensates for human error, which causes more than 90 percent of all car accidents. As a result, time spent behind the wheel is safer, cleaner, more efficient and more fun," continued Ghosn.
By 202X, expect to see Nissan Intelligent Driving technology deployed on cars in cities around the world.
The Nissan IDS experience
Some have compared a future with autonomous drive to living in a world of conveyer belts that simply ferry people from point A to B, but the Nissan IDS Concept promises a very different vision of tomorrow. Even when the driver selects Piloted Drive and turns over driving to the vehicle, the car's performance — from accelerating to braking to cornering — imitates the driver's own style and preferences.
In Manual Drive mode, the driver has control. The linear acceleration and cornering are pure and exhilarating. Yet behind the scenes, the Nissan IDS Concept continues to provide assistance. Sensors continually monitor conditions and assistance is available even while the driver is in control. In the event of imminent danger, Nissan IDS Concept will assist the driver in taking evasive action.
In addition to learning, the Nissan IDS Concept's AI communicates like an attentive partner. From information concerning traffic conditions, the driver's schedule to personal interests, Nissan IDS Concept's AI has what is needed to help create a driving experience that is comfortable, enjoyable and safe.
Design — Together, we ride
"A key point behind the Nissan IDS Concept is communication. For autonomous drive to become reality, as a society we have to consider not only communication between car and driver but also between cars and people. The Nissan IDS Concept's design embodies Nissan's vision of autonomous drive as expressed in the phrase together, we ride," says Mitsunori Morita, Design Director.
Two interiors enable two ways for the driver to enjoy the experience. Together, we ride is clearly demonstrated in the interior design. "The Nissan IDS Concept has different interiors depending on whether the driver opts for Piloted Drive or Manual Drive. This was something that we thought was absolutely necessary to express our idea of autonomous drive," says Morita.
Even though it is a hatchback, the Nissan IDS Concept's long wheelbase enables comfortable seating space for four adults. But the cabin becomes even more spacious when the driver selects Piloted Drive. In this mode, the steering wheel recedes into the center of the instrument panel and a large flat screen comes out. Various driving-related operations are handled by AI, voice and gestures from the driver. The interior, which is comprised of natural materials such as mesh leather, is illuminated by soft light. All four seats rotate slightly inward, facilitating easier conversation. It's like relaxing in a living room.
When the driver selects Manual Drive, the roomy interior transforms to put the driver in control. All seats face forward. The steering wheel, which takes styling cues from reins for horse riding, appears along with driving meters and a heads-up display that shows route and other driving information. Interior lighting switches to blue, stimulating the ability to concentrate. Nissan's use of hollow-structure A-pillars helps ensure excellent visibility by reducing blind spots and also contributes to the feeling of open space.
"In every situation, it is about giving the driver more choices and greater control. And the driver will remain the focus of our technology development efforts," Ghosn said at the show.
The transformation to Manual Drive can be carried out with ease through a switch between the front seats called the PD Commander. This is the only control the driver can physically operate when the car is in Piloted Drive: when the driver is ready to take over driving, a physical action should initiate the change.
Exterior design
For autonomous drive to be widely accepted, people need to fully trust the technology. Through its innovative communication capabilities, the Nissan IDS Concept promotes confidence and a sense of harmony for those outside the car as well. Various exterior lights and displays convey to pedestrians and others the car's awareness of its surroundings and signals its intentions. The car's side body line, for example, is actually an LED that Nissan calls the Intention Indicator. When pedestrians or cyclists are nearby, the strip shines white, signaling that the car is aware of them. Another electronic display, which faces outside from the instrument panel, can flash messages such as "After you" to pedestrians. This natural, harmonious system of communication signals a new future with cars.
Advanced aerodynamic performance for greater driving range
Design Director Mitsunori Morita says: "By the time Nissan Intelligent Driving technology is available on production cars, EVs will be able to go great distances on a single charge. Getting to this point will, of course, require the further evolution of batteries, but aerodynamic performance is also very important. We incorporated our most advanced aerodynamic technology in the design of the Nissan IDS Concept."
The height of the full carbon fiber body was constrained to 1,380 mm, sharply minimizing aerodynamic drag (Cd). Positioning the tires close to the corners of the body maximizes interior space while enabling a wrap-around cabin design. Nissan selected large-diameter wheels for high-performance and sportiness, but used very thin 175-size tires to minimize air and roll resistance. The wheels have a layered design suggestive of thin fins that create tiny vortexes of air flow on the wheel's surface. This design further contributes to smooth air flow.
The icicle pattern on the Nissan IDS Concept's grille symbolizes a pure and clean design — perfect for an EV. Shaped like a stack of ice blocks, the grille pattern appears transparent. The car's bluish satin silver body color heightens the impression of a comfortable and secure cabin space.
Highly evolved EV technology for long-distance driving
At Nissan's annual shareholders meeting in June, Executive Vice President Hideyuki Sakamoto said: "Our zero emission strategy centers on EVs. We are pursuing improved electric powertrain technologies, such as motors, batteries and inverters, which will enable us to mass produce and market EVs that equal or surpass the convenience of gasoline-powered cars."
The Nissan IDS Concept is fitted with a high-capacity 60 kWh battery, and thanks to its outstanding aerodynamics, low stance, flowing form and reduced weight due to its full-carbon-fiber body, the vehicle is designed to also meet the need to drive long distances. Other technologies on the Nissan IDS Concept include Piloted Park that can be operated by smartphone or tablet, and wireless charging technologies. Through these, the driver can leave parking and charging to the car.
Nissan's targets — Zero traffic fatalities and zero emissions
In order for our car-based society to be sustainable, complex issues ranging from sustainable energy supplies to climate change, air pollution and traffic safety must be addressed. At Nissan, we have set zero fatalities and zero emissions as aspirational targets in our mission to help create a sustainable car-based society.
Over 90 percent of traffic accidents are caused by human error. Nissan IDS Concept's extensive system of sensors and AI are designed to provide enhanced safety performance compared to a human driver. This technology brings us a step closer to the goal of zero traffic fatalities.
EVs produce no CO2 emissions and their batteries can store energy from renewable sources and turn it into electricity for homes and buildings. As the number of EVs increases, entire communities will be able to harness their power as part of a sustainable energy plan. Then, as EVs come to play a central role in energy supply, we will come that much closer to becoming a zero emission society.
Nissan believes that the Nissan IDS Concept will evolve into a leading innovation for next generation mobility and our quest for making these "two zeroes" a reality.
Featuring Nissan's most advanced safety, driving-control and EV technology — all taken to a new level by AI — the Nissan IDS Concept is a compelling showcase of a promising future.
